Which roof covering?

Concrete tiles

The most popular choice in Birmingham. Hard-wearing, good value, and they suit most post-war and modern houses.

Usually lasts 50 years or more.

Clay plain tiles

Small, warm-coloured tiles with a traditional look. Lovely on 1930s semis and older houses.

Often 60 to 100 years.

Natural slate

Welsh slate is the classic Victorian roof and lasts for generations. Spanish slate gives the same look for less.

Good slate can last over 100 years.

Man-made slate

Looks like slate, weighs less and costs less. A good choice where the timbers can't take heavy slate.

Typically 30 years or more.

How a re-roof goes

  1. Free inspection.
We look at the roof, the timbers and the access, and talk you through the options.
  2. Fixed written price.
What's included, start date and guarantee, in writing.
  3. Scaffold up and old roof off.
We only strip what we can cover again the same day.
  4. Membrane, battens and the new roof.
Then ridge, flashing, fascias and gutters if you're having them.
  5. Final check and clear up.
We walk you round the finished roof, then the scaffold comes down.

New roof questions

Do I need planning permission for a new roof?

Usually not, if you're replacing like with like. You may need permission if the house is listed, in a conservation area, or if you're changing the look a lot (for example from slate to concrete tiles). We'll tell you at the inspection.

What about building regulations?

Replacing more than a quarter of a roof's covering counts as building work, so it has to meet building regulations, including the rules on insulation. It must be signed off, either through a competent-person scheme or by building control. We'll explain which applies to your roof.

Is it worth re-using my old tiles?

Sometimes. If your tiles are sound and it's the battens and membrane that have failed, re-laying them can save money. Old concrete tiles often crack when they're lifted, though, so we'll check before suggesting it.

What if it rains during the job?

We watch the forecast closely and only strip what we can cover again the same day. If the weather turns, the roof is sheeted over until we can carry on.
