Chimney repairs and removal
Birmingham's older houses have a lot of chimneys, and they take the worst of the weather. We repoint, re-flash, rebuild or take them down.
Chimney work we do
- Repointing: raking out crumbling mortar and pointing the stack again
- Flaunching: re-bedding the pots in a new sloped mortar top so rain runs off
- Lead flashing: new lead where the stack meets the roof, the most common chimney leak
- Pots, caps and cowls: replacing cracked pots, capping chimneys you don't use (ventilated, to stop damp)
- Rebuilding: taking a leaning or crumbling stack down and building it back
- Removal: taking a stack down below the roof and tiling over
Shared chimneys
Many terraces and semis share a chimney stack on the party wall. Repairs are often split with next door. Taking a shared stack down, or any work that affects the shared wall, usually needs your neighbour's agreement under the Party Wall Act, so we always price that after a visit.
Is my chimney a problem?
- Gaps in the mortar, or bits of brick and mortar in the gutter
- Damp patches on the chimney breast inside
- A stack that leans, or cracked pots
- Stains on the ceiling next to the chimney
Having a new roof as well?
Add chimney work to your new roof and it shares the same scaffold.
